USA vs UK - administrative division

This post will explain you how the USA territory, so as the UK territory, is devided. Let's start with the USA.

The primary divison is the STATE. There are 50 states in the USA. And it's important to say that states are treated as seperate units. That's why there is e.g. different law in the states. Here you can see some examples:

States are divided into COUNTIES. In short, county is a region that has specific boundaries and usualy some level of governmental authority.  There are 3 048 counties. The number of counties per state ranges from the 3 counties (Delaware) to the 254 counties (Texas). It's also nice to know that 2 states: Louisiana and Alaska, instead of using the name county prefer to use parish and borough, respectively. 

Counties may be subdivided into TOWNSHIPS - small geographic areas. Some townships have governments and political power... but only some, others are only geographic designations. 

Townships can be subdivided into SECTIONS. Section is a region which does not have any separate government. 

I think that is enough about the USA, let's move on to the UK. 

I want to make everything clear so I think I should first tell you the difference between United Kingdom, Great Britain and England. 

As you can see here the United Kingdom contains: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. 

Great Britain is simply a geographical term and it represents an island. 

The administrative division of the UK is quite difficult.

As you can see, Endland is subdivided into 9 REGIONS. 

England can also be subdivided into COUNTIES. There are 48 geographic counties, but when it comes to official administrative division there are METROPOLITAN and NON-METROPOLITAN COUNTIES. There are 83 of them.

England can also be subdivided into DISTRICTS. And in England there are also CIVIL PARISHES - they are in size of a town, or a village. 

Now a few words about Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales 😊

Scotland can be subdivided into ELECTORAL REGIONS (8) or into COUNCIL AREAS (32).

Northern Ireland can be subdivided into 11 DISTRICTS.

Wales is divided into PRINCIPAL AREAS (26).
